EXPRESSIONS
THESIS Expressions is a visualization of time. It's purpose is to encapsulate viewers in its phone booth-like structure and transport them into a realm of self exploration. The specific self exploration is that of their individual understanding of time. The project is divided into three expressions of art — graphic design, fine art & writing — to better explore the concept of time. Materiality was a big factor in the symbolism found throughout the piece. Wood was used as a means to explore the past and present qualities of tree markings. Plexiglass (a difficult material to recycle) is meant to convey the eternity and invisibility of time. Laser cutting was used to engrave the visual language onto the plexiglass as it created an ethereal quality. The process consisted of several programs including: Adobe InDesign & Illustrator, Rhinoceros 4.0, Laser cutters, and woodworking tools. The visuals were created in AI and ID, they were then opened up and edited in Rhinoceros 4.0 in order to be laser etched onto the plexiglass panels. The wood was measured, cut and sanded to fit all the panels and create the final structure. There were several trial and errors with laser etching until the final pieces were created.
